- <p> DIED. Lucius ("Luke") Appling, 83, slick-fielding, Hall of
- Fame shortstop; in Cumming, Ga. Known as "Old Aches and Pains"
- for complaining to teammates about his ailments, Appling
- compiled a .310 lifetime batting average and 2,749 hits in his
- 20 seasons with the Chicago White Sox. In 1982, at 75, he
- delighted the crowd at an Old Timers game in Washington by
- slamming a home run off Warren Spahn.
